The Parenting Roller Coaster

An excerpt from The Passionate Mom:

Life comes with problems, and so do children. There will always be struggles and opposition to your efforts, days and even weeks when you just can’t seem to get ahead of the onslaught. Little children have little problems, and bigger children can have bigger problems. All five of my children are within six years of one another—I know it’s crazy, but I never planned to adopt two children the same ages as two of my biological children. Then they grew, and I had five teenagers all at one time…

It was and still is a fast, furious, and fun roller coaster that we ride a dozen times a day. Every ride is a lot of anticipation on the way up, fear and adrenaline on the way down, and exhilarating (or emotional) exhaustion when it is over. (click to tweet) But given the choice of a life with or without the roller coaster, I would choose to ride, without a doubt. It is my only excuse to be a little disheveled and wind-whipped!

Sometimes the roller coaster is a little painful.  Sometimes the ride is so rough you want to throw up.  Other times the roller coaster is exhilarating, scary fun.  The trick is to stay on the ride.  If we don’t commit to ride the roller coaster of life with our child–to be an active participant in the daily trials and successes of their life–our child will have to ride it alone. (click to tweet)

It makes me sad to see anyone riding life alone, especially a child.
